where the gallery works today
every piece stays with the studio that made it until someone buys it. we do the selling — the page, the price, the payment, the paperwork, the eu compliance — and the maker ships it from the bench it was made on.
that is why the collection is small, why the lead times on the page are the real ones, and why you can ask us anything about a piece: we know who made it.
spazio began as a family project in a 19th-century courtyard a few steps from gärtnerplatz. the first shows hung between the old walls: paper works by joão bragança, an architect who found cardboard during an internship with kengo kuma in tokyo, and paintings by gianna zanafredi, which had travelled from the venice biennale to chicago before arriving in the courtyard.
between 2021 and 2024 it became one of the quarter's liveliest rooms — 37 exhibitions, launches and gatherings, from glass blown with pizza-oven ash to a solo show of aquatints that filled every wall.
design is the centre, but never alone. munich's first new year's sake festival with miss sake japan. umami workshops with clarissa juse. espresso poured with la marzocco — and in august 2024 a coffee pop-up in the courtyard that grew into calima, today a café of its own in munich.
in 2025 we closed the doors and kept the gallery.
the public programme ended in early 2025 — a victim of its own success. the space at aventinstraße now holds artist residencies and a small community of freelancers, and opens for a show, a talk or a visit by appointment.
the gallery itself works from two places: munich stays as studio and residency base, lisbon is where the programme grows.
spazio began in a munich courtyard and works online today. the next step is a second address in lisbon, planned for 2027 — a room to see the pieces in, to show portuguese studios at home, and to bring the exhibition programme back into a physical space.
collection 01, the portugal edit, is the first move in that direction: portuguese studios, curated from lisbon, shipped from their own workshops.
both trained interior designers, with years in luxury residential and large-scale projects before spazio — which is why the gallery has worked with architects and interior studios from the first day. carolina curates and shapes the visual side; julian chooses the pieces, talks to the studios and answers your mail.
