In his youth, Renat Mersiianov pursued a career in professional football, traveling extensively and learning valuable lessons about competition, discipline, and the pursuit of excellence. This foundation of rigor and ambition later translated into his devotion to coffee. Over the years, Renat honed his skills, eventually earning recognition as a finalist in the SCA Germany Cup Tasting Championships in 2023, where he secured 4th place.

his academic journey is equally remarkable. He earned a Bachelor’s degree in Digital Film Design - Animation VFX from Media Design Hochschule and explored a Master’s in Psychology & Digital Transformation at Fresenius Hochschule. Additionally, his undergraduate studies in Advertising and Public Relations at the Russian State Social University reflect his interest in communication and media.

Renat’s professional experience as Head Barista and Roaster at renowned Munich-based coffee establishments has solidified his reputation as a true artist in specialty coffee. His expertise spans coffee roasting, customer consultation, and logistics, making him a versatile and skilled professional in the specialty coffee scene.

Today, Calima Specialty Coffee is an established café in munich, which resulted from a unique pop-up experience at spazio back in august 2024.

Inspired by his passion for exceptional coffee and commitment to quality, Renat Mersiianov launched Calima as a place where art, community, and the craftsmanship of coffee converge.

The name Calima holds deep symbolism. Derived from the natural phenomenon of winds that carry sand from Africa’s Sahara Desert, Calima represents a bridge between continents and cultures. Just like the desert sands, Calima’s coffee beans originate from Africa, bringing with them rich, bold flavors and aromas that embody the essence of the “hot continent.”

for the calima specialty coffee pop-up in august 2024, we provided an immersive setting, a space for exploration and connection—blending art, design, and culinary culture. this enabled renat mersiianov to showcase his idea and creations in a way that resonated deeply with our visitors.

the overwhelming success of the pop-up—evident in its positive reception and (too) high demand (which was the reason we had to close it after only one week) —paved the way for this natural next step: a new café in collaboration with mas/tava fine dining in munich.
