‘the border is not a spatial fact with sociological effects, but a sociological fact that takes spatial form.’ (georg simmel) textiles act as natural borders: garments, blankets, curtains, tents. fabrics are closely tied to emotional experience; their tactile appeal is written into our bodily memory. as the thing that wraps the body, the textile is part of the first impression of an encounter — it decides on closeness and distance, empathy or doubt.
hanna klingseisen
randbereiche — hanna klingseisen’s exhibition at spazio, 14 to 19 november 2023. with a background in haute couture she spent fifteen years in the textile industry before founding her own label in 2012; since 2018 she has been turning the couture fabrics she collected into works of art, to break the cycle of constantly making new clothes.
starting from the experience of motherhood, her work asks questions that go far beyond that personal space: how much of the self, of one’s own contour, remains when there is a constant connection to other people? what makes up our own border, and how do connections arise? society’s dissolving borders show in the loosening of structures; the individual faces the community, and despite ever-increasing individualisation we merge with the public — in how we present ourselves, in how we work.
biographie
with a background in haute couture, hanna klingseisen spent fifteen years in the textile industry, working for several couture ateliers before founding her own label in 2012, designing prêt-à-porter collections, bridal and evening wear until 2017. after the birth of her daughters in 2018 and 2020 she left fashion and began transforming the collected couture fabrics into works of art. her process centres on interpersonal themes that, on a larger scale, are fundamental to society as a whole.
