In December 2023, the tetris chandelier debuted at a pop-up market hosted by Salon c/o, captivating visitors with its exquisite craftsmanship amid a curated showcase of emerging and established brands. Crafted by von schoenebeck, the Munich-based studio of artist duo Magdalena and Johannes, the chandelier first emerged as rough prototypes at the 2023 Kocherlball, a Bavarian celebration in the English Garden where candlelit tables illuminate the night.
On the hottest day of summer 2023, Johannes crafted three prototypes from scrap wood in his cooled basement workshop, designed to hold five, seven, or nine candles. At the Kocherlball, these chandeliers stood out with their simple elegance, drawing admiration and purchase inquiries from attendees. Verena, founder of Salon c/o, spotted the prototypes that night, and months later, a chance encounter with Magdalena and Johannes at her space sparked the creation of a limited first edition.
Evolved from the Kocherlball prototypes, the tetris chandelier comes in three variations for three, five, or seven candles, with only 13 pieces crafted. Using the ancient Japanese shou sugi ban technique, the burned wood surfaces inspire a poetic, rough aesthetic that blends elegance and festivity. Three repeating geometric shapes form a striking, unified design.
Embodying clarity and simplicity, TETRIS rejects “form follows function,” weaving tradition, beauty, and nostalgia into objects that fit seamlessly into life like perfect puzzle pieces.
