spazio began in 2020 as a family project in a 19th-century factory courtyard at aventinstraße 1, a few steps from gärtnerplatz. the early shows were hung between the old walls: paper works by joão bragança, a portuguese architect who discovered cardboard during an internship with kengo kuma in tokyo, and paintings by gianna zanafredi, whose work had travelled from the venice biennale to chicago before arriving in the courtyard.

between 2021 and 2024 the courtyard became one of the quarter's liveliest rooms — 37 exhibitions, launches and gatherings. glass blown from pizza-oven ash by studio peipei. camilla richter's dichroic light objects. munich jewellery week guests evelyne pretti and handan yalki toyhan. cyrcus milano, bringing digital fabrication from the salone del mobile to munich for the first time. twenty-one young painters from the academy's kneffel class. and christine schuhbeck's enter the void, a solo show of aquatints, velvet works and white-on-white prints that gave the space its densest week.

art and design were never alone here. spazio hosted munich's first new year's sake festival with miss sake japan, cooked through umami workshops with clarissa juse, poured espresso with la marzocco — and in august 2024 a coffee pop-up in the space grew into calima, today a café of its own in munich. the spazioweek bundled all of it into one collective format in 2023: art, design, music and food under one roof. and twice — in 2023 and 2024 — spazio took part in munich creative business week.

in early 2025 we closed the public programme — a victim of its own success. the space lives on quietly: artist residencies, collaborative sessions and a small community of creative freelancers. from time to time it opens its doors again — for a curated exhibition, a talk, a moment with the collection in the room.

the gallery now works from two places: munich stays as studio and residency base, lisbon is where the programme grows. spazio's centre today is collectible design from emerging studios — with a focus on portugal, from lisbon to porto — sold on consignment: every piece stays at its designer's studio until it finds an owner, we handle the selling — payment, customer care, eu packaging compliance — and the designer ships it to you directly.
