atelier von ehren is the berlin studio of artist and designer barbara jenner, founded in 2022. she creates sculptural objects in stoneware that move somewhere between vessel and sculpture.
her work often begins with a simple, familiar shape — a cylinder, a sphere, a cuboid. through repetition, small shifts and unusual proportions, these shapes gradually take on a character of their own. jenner is particularly interested in how an object's proportions, surface and silhouette affect the way we see it, and how it relates to the space around it. each piece is made individually by hand.
jenner studied tapestry at the academy of fine arts vienna and holds a phd in art history. her work develops in ongoing series, returning to certain forms and questions from different directions.
duotone draws on her years in tapestry and an interest in how repetition becomes pattern. round & round starts with a cylinder and takes inspiration from joni mitchell's the circle game. cutting weight looks at the relationship between the inside and outside of a bowl, and at what point weight or mass becomes visible. schattenfänger is a series of objects that seem a little too long, slightly out of proportion or somehow off balance. their silhouettes change depending on where you stand, and so do the shadows they cast.
the studio is named after julius von ehren (1864–1944), jenner's great-grandfather, a hamburg painter who often found his subjects in ordinary scenes of everyday life.
