susanna costantini weaves by hand at her atelier in silvi marina, on the abruzzo coast. her series start from agnès varda's film on gleaning and from the 17th-century moon maps of galileo and hevelius.

susanna costantini works from her atelier in silvi marina, on the abruzzo coast. every piece is handwoven there, in a numbered edition of 20.

in les glaneurs et la glaneuse, agnès varda follows the gleaners: people who gather what is left in the fields after the harvest. susanna took the film as the starting point for a series she calls spigolatura, italian for gleaning. she weaves it from warp ends and leftover yarn, and describes the work as a process akin to the selective nature of memory, in which she decides what to retain, recover or transform.

her terrae series goes back to the 17th-century moon maps of galileo and hevelius and weaves imaginary geographies out of them, on a traditional four-shaft floor loom. the question she puts to the viewer is a plain one: what do you see when you look at me?

totem takes its name from totemism; abstract figures emerge slowly from the weave. bandiera sets a large rectangle in soft green and warm yellow.
